4.0 out of 5 stars Martial Arts Defined, December 21, 2009

"50 Martial Arts Myths" by Sulaiman Sharif will hold the interest of anyone interested in martial arts from the complete novice to someone with a large repertoire of knowledge. I have always been interested in martial arts but had never taken the time to learn much about it. I had seen the moves in movies, watched a friend's son compete and was aware of different color belts. That is where my knowledge stopped. I am so glad that I decided to read this book. Sharif has made me see so much more about martial arts. The author is enthusiastic and well informed and you can see how much he loves it in his writing. I found the meanings behind the different belt colors very interesting. I also enjoyed learning about the different types of martial arts. I had no idea that women were so involved in martial arts and were actually very likely to be good at it. I hadn't really heard many myths, but I can see how misinterpretation can occur. If you are thinking of becoming involved in any form of martial arts, this book is a must read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Martial Arts Facts, December 21, 2009

"50 Martial Arts Myths" by Sulaiman Sharif is an informative book that will dispell the myths about martial arts and help you learn the facts. The book is well written and gives you history and background of martial arts. This book addresses men and women. It will explain the meaning of the belt colors and everything else you will need to know about the sport.

Although the only form of martial arts I was ever involved in was kickboxing, this book was interesting to read. If you have thought about taking up martial arts, this book will give you a background in the sport and may help you make up your mind. It will at least let you go into the sport with some knowledge. If you already participate in martial arts this will clear up any questions you may have about the sport.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's not just high kicks and quick chops., December 18, 2009

"Martial Arts" to me since I was child was fascinating to watch at the movies and on TV let's face it you always rooted for them. They kicked butt. Then you wanted to take the classes, for all the wrong reasons, and do the high kicks and quick chops. Not so easy, friends of mine have completed the courses and classes and I show them much respect.

You gain a new whole new outlook for the sport, while learning the history and concepts. It is not just passing and failing a test for the next belt color, it is the hisrtoy and level of respect you are earning from other members.

You are taught control, body maintenance, self esteem and respect of others. It is also mind challenging and mind stimulating. Sulaiman Sharif the author did well when he wrote this book. It will be one I would recommend to anyone with an interest or in the sport.
